Is your query a frequently asked question?
A service factor of 1.0 means a unit has just enough capacity to handle the application. There is no tolerance for additional requirements,
which could cause the gearbox to overheat or fail. For most industrial applications, a service factor of 1.4 is adequate.
This service factor signifies that the gearbox can handle 1.4 times the application requirement.
The purpose of mechanical service factor is to sustain the fluctuating load from application. We choose service factors to empower the gearbox from uncertain loads from application like overhung loads, shock loads from the application, etc.
The purpose of thermal service factor is to overcome the thermal loads due to the fluctuating load from application. Environment like ambient temperature, vacuum area working, etc.
Its depends on the requirement of the RPM and torque based on the working hours. For more details, refer PTPL Product catalogue & send the enquiry to PTPL.
Prime mover can be DC motor, AC Motor, Engines, turbines etc.
To assemble a gearbox with a machine, first check the bore sizes and shaft sizes, keyway dimensions and as described in PTPL maintenance manual, use appropriate tools like, plastic hammers, torque wrenches to assemble the gearbox with machine. Check the linearity & alignments of both shafts, etc.
Gearbox can be assembled with many different types of coupling or shaft. For example- Gear couplings, cordon shaft, connecting shaft, pulley & belt arrangement. For more details, kindly refer PTPL product maintenance manual.
A torque arm is available to support the reaction torque of hollow shaft gear units in the shaft-mounted version. The torque can bear tensile stress as well as thrust loads. The length of the torque arm can be adjusted within a certain range. To keep the bending moment on the machine shaft as low as possible, the torque arm must always be mounted on the same side as the machine that is driven. The torque arm can be mounted on the top or bottom of the gear unit.
It is always used on input shaft of any gearboxes. Holdback is used for only one way direction of rotation, either clockwise or anticlockwise. Applications: conveyor & bucket elevator, crane, etc.
Breathers: Water, dust and debris should not be permitted to ingress internally into the gearbox through the breather. They should be of the correct type and style and kept clean at all times allowing the gearbox to breathe with ease.
Temperature (Overheating): Monitor the gearbox temperature on a regular basis and observe for any sudden changes in temperature using an infrared temperature gun.
Lubrication: Lubrication should be adhered to by the gearbox manufacturer's specification for type, grade and quantity. Regular renewal again should be carried out according to the gearbox manufacturer’s recommendations. Also change the lubrication oil after fixed duration of time as recommended by the manufacturer.
Gear Wear / Contacts: Inspect the internal gears via the removal of inspection covers or with the aid of an endoscope. Look for signs of wear in the form of pitting and spilling.
Vibration Analysis:-Regular Vibration Analysis of the internal bearings and gears will confirm any significant changes in the condition of the internals of the gearbox and help prevent any unplanned loss of production.
Note : For more information go through the PTPL Maintenance manual
Kulber oils, BP oils, Shell oils, etc. For more information, refer the PTPL maintenance manual.
To check the right grade of oil, refer to the PTPL maintenance manual or you can ask our service engineer during your next visit.
You can check the oil level of gearbox by using dipstick. It helps you to know the oil level. For more details, refer the PTPL maintenance manual.
Yes, the life of a gearbox depends very much on the life of the bearings.
Helical: 98% approx.
Worm: 80% approx.
Planetary: 99% approx.
Efficiency can vary as per the gearbox stages. For more information, please refer our product catalogues.
